     John Reedham Erskine Berney was born on 31 March 1929.1 He was the son of Major Sir Thomas Reedham Berney, 10th Bt. and Marjorie Agnew Erskine Gill.1 He married Hon. Jean Davina Stuart, daughter of James Grey Stuart, 1st Viscount Stuart of Findhorn and Lady Rachel Cavendish, on 27 July 1951.1 He died on 24 July 1952 at age 23 at Korea, killed in action.1
     John Reedham Erskine Berney was educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Norfolk Regiment.1 He fought in the Korean War, where he was mentioned in despatches posthumously.1
