Septimus Wontner-Smith was born on 7 January 1883 at Somerset Lodge, Canonbury, Essex, England.1 He was the son of James Edwards Wontner-Smith and Emma Scamell.1 He died on 27 May 1915 at age 32 at Alexandria, Egypt, from wounds recieved in action.1 He was buried at Chatby War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.2
Septimus Wontner-Smith gained the rank of Private in the service of the G Company, Australian Imperial Forces.2 He fought in the Gallipoli Campaign in April 1915, where he was mortally wounded.1
