Traditionally, he was supposed to have been drowned while pearl diving in the Torres Straits in Sep 1893, aged 32. This story is disputed. He is thought to have taken up a pearl diving contract when his wife ran off with another man, but told his parents that he would not return. Reportedly, he settled in Hawaii and was a seaman on the Pacific route ships. He later visited his parents one time, and indicated that he was going to America to start a new life.2
