     Evan Christian was born at Lewaigue, Maughold, Isle of Man.1 He is the son of Reverend Evan Christian and Ann Kelly.1
     He divided his portion of the Scarlett Estate, which he received upon his brother Robert's death, amongst his sisters, except for Susannah, who had already received a portion directly from Robert.1 He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1805 in the service of the Royal Navy, serving on H.M.S. Barfleur.1 He fought in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1807, on board H.M.S. Brunswick.1
