William Ernest Darke Christian was born on 6 November 1888 at Norfolk Island.1 He was the son of Isaac Godfrey Christian and Frances Elizabeth Edwards.1 He married Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Smith on 24 March 1916 at Ngaruawahia, New Zealand.1 He died at Auckland, New Zealand.1
William Ernest Darke Christian was a fireman and teacher.1 He first tried to stowaway on his father's whaler at the age of 8. He was tall and muscular enough to pass for 12 or 13, by which time you were expected to earn your living in those hard times. He managed to get aboard undetected, but made the mistake of trying too hard and lit
up a pipeful of tobacco (his first) and his nausea gave him away. The stories of his bravery and individuality as a young man would fill a book. He did go to sea by the age of 12 as a hand harpoonist. Later, he sailed with the Bishop of Melanesia to South America, and was aboard the cable ship 'Iris' during World War I when Count Von Lucknow was arrested. In 1916, he settled in New Zealand. (Glynn Christian: Fragile Paradise).1
