Mary Elizabeth Townshend was born on 2 September 1762.1 She was the daughter of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney of St. Leonards and Elizabeth Powys.1 She married General John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, son of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham and Hester Grenville, Baroness Chatham, on 10 July 1783 at Albemarle Street, St. George Hanover Square, London, EnglandG.1 She died on 21 May 1821 at age 58 at Hill Strret, Berkeley Square, London, EnglandG, without issue.1 She was buried on 30 May 1821 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1
     After her marriage, Hon. Mary Elizabeth Townshend was styled as Countess of Chatham on 10 July 1783. From 10 July 1783, her married name became Pitt.1
