Charles Hordern was born on 30 March 1880.1 He was the son of Peter Hordern and Edith Charlotte Fearon.1 He married, firstly, Lucy Frances Woodbridge, daughter of Thomas Hurry Riches Woodbridge, on 9 April 1907.1 He married, secondly, Cecil Pearl Beeching, daughter of Major Hugh Cecil Westall Beeching, on 25 March 1913.1 He married, thirdly, Joan Masterton Smith, daughter of Sir James Edward Masterton Smith, on 28 April 1951.2
     Lt.-Col. Charles Hordern was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1902.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1919.1 He was decorated with the Croce di Guerra.1 He was decorated with the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus of Italy.1 He was Plebiscite Commissioner in 1920 at Klagenfurt, Austria.1 He was a Control Commissioner in 1924 at Germany.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1925 in the service of the Royal Engineers.1 He was with the Historical Section, Committee of Imperial Defence between 1933 and 1941.1
