     James Purdon Lewes Thomas, 1st and last Viscount Cilcennin was born on 13 October 1903.1 He was the son of James Lewes Thomas and Anne Louisa Purdon.1,2 He died on 13 July 1960 at age 56, unmarried.1
     He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1926 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Stanley Baldwin between 1929 and 1931.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hereford between 1931 and 1955.2 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1932 and 1935, to the Secretary of State for the Dominions.2 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1935 and 1938, to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.2 He held the office of Lord Commissioner of the Treasury between 1939 and 1943.2 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1940, to the Secretary of State for War.2 He held the office of Finance Secretary to the Admiralty between 1943 and 1945.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1951.2 He held the office of First Lord of the Admiralty between 1951 and 1956.2 He graduated from Oriel College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1952 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was created 1st Viscount Cilcennin, of Hereford, co.
