Sir Edward Gilbert Clayton was born on 16 July 1841.1 He was the son of Maj.-Gen. Henry Clayton and Jean Henrietta Blair.2 He married Georgina Elizabeth Sykes Clayton, daughter of Sykes Clayton, on 4 November 1864.1 He died on 5 March 1917 at age 75.1
Sir Edward Gilbert Clayton gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Engineers.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.).1 He was Inspector of Prisons.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Surrey.1 He was Secretary to the Prison Commissioners between 1895 and 1908.1
