     John Clerk was born on 16 April 1816.1 He was the son of Rt. Hon. Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 6th Bt. and Maria Anne Law.2 He married Rose Alice Clothilde Greene, daughter of Thomas Greene, on 9 December 1845.1 He died on 10 April 1900 at age 83.1
     John Clerk was invested as a Queen's Counsel (Q.C.).1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Leicestershire.1
