Francis James Stopford was born on 6 July 1857.1 He was the son of Admiral Robert Fanshawe Stopford and Emily Anna Wilbraham.1 He married Catherine Mary Howard Tripp, daughter of Charles George Tripp and Ellen Sheppard Harper, on 6 June 1894.1 He died on 25 August 1928 at age 71.1
