     William Melville Codrington was born on 16 December 1892.1 He was the son of Lt.-Gen. Sir Alfred Edward Codrington and Adela Harriet Portal.2 He married Katherine Theodosia Sinclair, daughter of John Houston Sinclair and Muriel Evelyn Kathleen Cockburn, on 26 February 1935.1 He died on 29 April 1963 at age 70.1
     William Melville Codrington was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Reserve of Officers late 16th Lancers.1 He was decorated with the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1919.1 He was a director of Powell Duffryn Ltd.1 He was a director of Sun Alliance Insurance Company.1 He was chairman of Nyasaland Railways Ltd.1 He was Assistant Under-Secretary of the Foreign Office between 1940 and 1945.1 He was Chief Security Officer, War Cabinet between 1942 and 1945.1 He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1946.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Rutland in 1947.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland between 1957 and 1963.1
