     He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Navy.¹

     Helen Margaret Colquhoun was the daughter of Lt.-Col. Sir Alan John Colquhoun of Luss, 6th Bt. and Justine Henrietta Kennedy.² She married Captain Michael Conder Harewell Smith-Carington, son of Richard Smith-Carington, on 16 August 1926.¹ She died on 12 October 1955, without issue.¹
      From 16 August 1926, her married name became Smith-Carington.
