     Joseph Rogerson Cotter was born on 10 December 1869.1 He was the son of Reverend Richard Henry Cotter and Sarah Pearce Lawrenson.2 He married Ellen Harriett Cotter, daughter of Surgn.-Col. Samuel Kyle Cotter and Alice Jamieson, in 1913.1 He died on 31 March 1957 at age 87.1
     Joseph Rogerson Cotter graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) by Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1
