     Major William Edward Gatacre was born on 23 January 1878.2 He was the son of Sir William Forbes Gatacre.2 He married, firstly, Mary Margaret Kennedy, daughter of Francis George Mulholland Kennedy, on 3 November 1908.2 He and Mary Margaret Kennedy were divorced in 1925.2 He married, secondly, Alice Julie Hortense Jacqueline Aurélie de Stuers on 10 February 1926.2 He died on 3 June 1959 at age 81.2
     Major William Edward Gatacre fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900.2 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, where he became a POW in Germany.2 He gained the rank of Major in the service of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.1
