     Lt.-Col. Thomas Esmonde, V.C. was born on 25 August 1831.1 He was the son of Commander James Esmonde and Anna Maria Murphy.2 He married Matilda Marie O'Kelly, daughter of Peter de Pentheny O'Kelly, on 24 November 1859.1 He died on 14 January 1872 at age 40.1
     Lt.-Col. Thomas Esmonde, V.C. fought in the Crimean War.1 He was decorated with the award of Victoria Cross (V.C.) (at the Siege of Sebastopol) in 1855.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment.1
