Robert Godfrey Wolseley Bewicke-Copley, 5th Lord Cromwell was born on 23 May 1893.1 He was the son of Brig.-Gen. Sir Robert Calverley Alington Bewicke-Copley and Selina Frances Watson-Copley.2 He married Freda Constance Cripps, daughter of Major Sir Frederick William Beresford Cripps, on 12 February 1925.1 He died on 21 October 1966 at age 73.1
Robert Godfrey Wolseley Bewicke-Copley, 5th Lord Cromwell was educated at Eton College, Eton, Berkshire, England.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.1 He was decorated with the award of Military Cross (M.C.).1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Leicestershire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Leicestershire.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Lord Cromwell [E., 1375] on 16 July 1923.1 On 16 July 1923 the abeyance of the Barony Cromwell was terminated and he summoned to Parliament by writ.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Royal Army Reserve of Officers.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was wounded and became a POW.1 He was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1944.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire between 1949 and 1966.1 He was invested as a Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.).1
