John French was born on 13 March 1853.1 He was the son of Charles French, 3rd Baron de Freyne of Coolavin and Catherine Maree.2 He married Nannie Dillon, daughter of Valentine B. Dillon, on 26 July 1877.1 He died on 23 May 1916 at age 63.1
John French was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, England.1 He held the office of Resident Magistrate for County Kerry between 1892 and 1898.1 He held the office of Resident Magistrate for County Limerick in 1898.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Roscommon.1 He lived at Miramar, Cobh, County Cork, Ireland.1 He also had three younger sons and an elder daughter (all of whom died unmarried).3
