Lt.-Col. William Robert Hunter Charley was born on 25 April 1924.1 He is the son of Harold Richard Charley and Phyllis Hunter.2 He married Catherine Janet Kingan, daughter of William Sinclair Kingan, on 24 September 1960.1
Lt.-Col. William Robert Hunter Charley usually went by his middle name of Robert.3 He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.1 In 1943 he was enlisted in the Royal Ulster Rifles.1 He was educated at Queen's University, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of officer on 2 September 1944 in the service of the Royal Ulster Rifles.1 He fought in the Korean War.1 He was Commanding Officer of the OTC Queen's University, Belfast between 1965 and 1968.1 He was invested as a Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.).1 He retired from the military in 1971, with the rank of officer, late of the Royal Irish Rangers.1 He was on Staff in 1972 at Northern Ireland Polytechnic, Ireland.1 He lived in 1976 at Seymour Lodge, Larch Hill, Craigavad, County Down, Ireland.1
