Major John Francis William Charley was born on 14 May 1857.1 He was the son of John Stouppe Charley and Mary Stewart Forster.2 He died on 15 December 1899 at age 42 at Coelnso, Natal, South Africa, from wounds received in action.1
Major John Francis William Charley gained the rank of Major in the service of the 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.1 He was Commandant of Messourie, North-West Province.1 He fought in the Battle of Colenso on 15 December 1899, where he was mortally wounded leading his regiment.1
