Walter Matthew Charley was born on 23 May 1827.1 He was the son of Matthew Charley and Mary Anne Roberts.2 He married, firstly, Isabel Irvine on 7 August 1856.1 He married, secondly, Catherine Crowe on 24 November 1869.1 He died on 13 January 1870 at age 42.1

Sir William Thomas Charley was born on 5 March 1833.1 He was the son of Matthew Charley and Mary Anne Roberts.2 He married Clara Harbord, daughter of F. G. Harbord, on 11 February 1890.1 He died on 8 July 1904 at age 71.1
Sir William Thomas Charley was educated at Belmont Lee School.1 He graduated from St. John's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1856 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He was a practising Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Salford between 1868 and 1880.1 He was Common Serjeant of London between 1878 and 1892.1 He was invested as a Knight Bachelor in 1880.1 He was commanding officer of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) between 1883 and 1889.1 He was senior director of Milners' Safe Company.1 He was decorated with the award of Royal Officers' Decoration (V.D.).1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in 1889 in the service of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).1 He was author of legal and other works (including an apologia for the House of Lords and a travel book).1 He was co-founder of RUKBA.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of the City of London.1 He lived at Woodbourne, East Grinstead, Sussex, England.1
