Arthur Dobbs1

     Arthur Dobbs was born on 2 April 1689.2 He was the son of Richard Dobbs and Mary Stewart.2 He married Ann Osborne, daughter of Captain John Osborne, on 12 May 1719.2 He died on 28 March 1765 at age 75.2
     He held the office of High Sheriff of County Antrim in 1720.2 He held the office of Mayor of Carrickfergus in 1720.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Carrickfergus in 1727.2 He held the office of Mayor of Carrickfergus in 1728.2 He wrote the book Essays on the Trade of Ireland, published 1729.2 He was a founding member of the Dublin Society (later incorporated as the Royal Dublin Society) in 1731.2 He held the office of Mayor of Carrickfergus in 1732.2 He took an important part in trying to improve agricultural methods in Ireland.2 He was Engineer and Surveyor-General of Ireland in 1733.2 A naturalist and expert on bees.2 In 1733 he obtained a grant of 200,000 acres in North Carolina.2 He gained Walpole's support for a policy stressing the importance of American colonization and trade in the struggle against France.2 He held the office of Mayor of Carrickfergus in 1741.2 Between 1741 and 1746 he organized two expeditions to discover the North-West passage from Hudson's Bay to Pacific.2 He was a partner of the Ohio Company of Virginia in 1748.2 He held the office of Governor of North Carolina between 1754 and 1765.2 He lived at Castle Dobbs, County Antrim, IrelandG.2 He worked for closer commercial relations between Ireland and France.2
