Sir John Richardson was born on 5 November 1787 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.2 He married Mary Fletcher, daughter of Archibald Fletcher and Eliza Dawson.1 He died on 5 June 1865 at age 77.2
He was educated at Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 He gained the rank of Surgeon in 1807 in the service of the |Royal Navy.2 Between 1819 and 1822 Coppermine Expedition, with John Franklin in seach of the North-West Passage.2 He co-authored the book Fauna Boreali-Americana, published 1829.2 He was invested as a Knight in 1846.2 Between 1848 and 1849 with John Rae in an unsuccessful search in the Arctic for Franklin.2 He wrote the book An Arctic Searching Expedition, published 1851.2
