     Lt.-Col. James Cosmo Russell was born on 18 October 1878.1 He was the son of Reverend Henry Charles Russell and Hon. Leila Louisa Millicent Willoughby.1 He married Mary Katherine Clements, daughter of Reverend Edward Mansfield Clements, on 8 June 1916.1 He died on 31 July 1917 at age 38, killed in action.1
     Lt.-Col. James Cosmo Russell gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 6th Batalion, Cameron Highlanders.1 He fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Indian Army.1 He was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917.1

Leila Louisa Millicent Willoughby, on 8 June 1916.1 She married, secondly, Lt.-Col. Cyril Frankland Meares, son of Colonel George Brooke Meares, on 23 October 1919.1 She died in 1959.1
     From 8 June 1916, her married name became Russell. From 23 October 1919, her married name became Meares.
