     He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Royal Engineers.1 He graduated from Christ's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1859 with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1

     John Murray-Gartshore was born on 5 October 1804.1 He was the son of Sir Patrick Murray of Ochtertyre, 6th Bt. and Lady Mary Anne Hope.2 He married, firstly, Mary Douglas, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Howard Douglas, 3rd Bt. and Anne Dundas, on 11 August 1836.1 He married, secondly, Augusta Louisa Tavel, daughter of Reverend George Frederick Tavel and Lady Augusta FitzRoy, on 29 June 1852.1 He died on 22 June 1884 at age 79.1
     He lived Ravelston.1 Midlothian.1 He was also known as John Murray.1 In August 1877 he received a paralytic shock from which he never fully recovered.3
