     Oliver Robert Gurney was born on 28 January 1911 at Kensington, London, England.1 He was the son of Robert Gurney and Sarah Gamzu Garstang.1 He married Diane Hope Esencourt, daughter of René Hugo Esencourt and Hope Amy Constance Preston, in 1957 at Adingdon, Berkshire, England.1 He died on 11 January 2001 at age 89 at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.2 He fought in the Second World War, with the Royal Artillery.2 He was Reader in Assyriologist and scholar of the Hittites between 1945 and 1978.2 He wrote the book The Hittites, published 1952.2 He was appointed Fellow, British Academy (F.B.A.) in 1959.2
