     He lived at Gillitts, Natal, South Africa.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Kenya Defence Force and East African Pioneer Corps.1

     Robert John Napier, 5th Baron Napier of Magdala was born on 16 June 1904 at Mussoorie, India.1,2 He was the son of Edward Herbert Scott Napier, 4th Baron Napier of Magdala and Florence Martha Perceval.3 He married Elizabeth Marian Hunt, daughter of Edmund Henderson Hunt, on 20 September 1939.1 He died on 29 October 1987 at age 83 at Penrith, Cumberland, England.1,2
     He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Engineers.1 He fought in the Waziristan Campaign between 1936 and 1937.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1944.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Napier of Magdala, in Abyssinia and of Caryngton, co. Palatine of Chester [U.K., 1868] on 20 July 1948.1 He retired from the military in 1959, with the rank of Brigadier.1
