     James Somerville, 9th Lord Somerville was the son of Hugh Somerville, 8th Lord Somerville and Margaret Hamilton.1 He married Lilias Bannatyne, daughter of Sir James Bannatyne, Lord Newhall.1 He died on 3 January 1677.1
     He succeeded to the title of 9th Lord Somerville [S., 1444] in 1640, although he didn't use the title.1
