Maj.-Gen. Sir Francis Howard was born on 26 March 1848. He was the son of Sir Henry Francis Howard and Marie Ernestine von der Schulenburg. He married Gertrude Jane Boyd, daughter of Hugh Conyngham Boyd, on 23 April 1895. He died on 21 March 1930 at age 81.
