     Lt.-Col. St. John Louis Hyde du Plat Taylor was born on 22 January 1865.1 He was the son of Colonel John Lowther du Plat Taylor and Emily Emma Charlotte Smith.1 He married Alice Campbell, daughter of unknown Campbell, in 1904.1
     He was educated between 1878 and 1883 at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was commissioned on 9 December 1884 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Royal Artillery.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 22 March 1894.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900.1 He gained the rank of Major on 18 April 1900.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1901.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, and he was mentioned in despatches.1
