     Sir Francis Wortley, 1st Bt. was born on 15 August 1591.2 He was the son of Sir Richard Wortley and Elizabeth Boughton. He married, firstly, Grace Brouncker, daughter of Sir William Brouncker, in 1610.2 He married, secondly, Hester Smithies, daughter of George Smithies, on 19 April 1625.2 He died in September 1652 at age 61.2
     He was appointed Knight on 15 January 1610.2 He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He was created 1st Baronet Wortley [England] on 29 June 1611. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for East Retford from 1624 to 1625.2 He gained the rank of Colonel between 1642 and 1644 in the Royalist Army.2 Between 1644 and 1649 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.2 He wrote the book Characters and Elegies, published 1646.2
