     Sir Robert Richard Chute Torrens was born on 1 July 1814 at Cork, County Cork, Ireland.1 He was the son of Colonel Robert Torrens and Charity Herbert Chute.1 He married Barbara Park in 1839.2 He died on 31 August 1884 at age 70 at Falmouth, Cornwall, England.1
     He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He held the office of Premier of South Australia between 1 September 1857 and 30 September 1857.2 He wrote the book The South Australian System of Conveyancing by Registration of Title, published 1859.2 He wrote the book A Handy Book on the Real Property Act of South Australia, published 1862.2 He wrote the book Transportation Considered as a Punishment and as a Mode of Founding Colonies, published 1863.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cambridge between 1868 and 1874.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.) in 1872.2 He wrote the book An Essay on the Transfer of Land by Registration, published 1882.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1884.2
