     He was educated at King Edward's School, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England.1 He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 He was commissioned on 5 May 1847 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the Cape Mounted Rifles.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March 1848.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 21 May 1850.1
