     Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 5th Bt. was the son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell.3 He married Rosemary Appleby, daughter of Joseph Dacre Appleby and Catharine Fleming.1 He died in 1798, without issue.1
     He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] on 29 January 1784.1

     He was in the Honourable East India Company Service.1

     Janet Irving is the daughter of George Irving of Newton.2 She married James Clerk, son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell, on 18 October 1786.1

     Rt. Hon. Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 6th Bt. was born in 1787.2 He was the son of James Clerk and Janet Irving.2 He married Maria Anne Law, daughter of Ewan Law and Henrietta Sarah Markham, on 13 August 1810.2 He died on 23 December 1867 at Penicuik House, Penicuik, Midlothian, ScotlandG.3
     He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] in 1798.1 He matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 21 January 1806.3 He graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 5 July 1810 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Midlothian between 1811 and 1820.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1819.3 He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty between 1819 and 1827.3 He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty between 1828 and 1830.3 He held the office of Under-Secretary of the Home Department between 1830 and 1835.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Stamford between 1838 and 1847.2 He held the office of Secretary of the Treasury in 1841.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1845.2 He held the office of Vice-President of the Board of Trade between 1845 and 1846.2 He held the office of Master of the Mint between 1845 and 1846.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dover between 1847 and 1852.2
