     John Newton was the son of Colonel Philip Newton and Sarah Westrop.1 He married Janet Sempill Forbes, daughter of Alexander Forbes and Janet Forbes, on 2 July 1850 at Culsamond, Aberdeenshire, ScotlandG.1,2 He died on 22 October 1859, without issue.3
     He held the office of High Sheriff of County Carlow in 1856.1 He lived at Bagenalstown House, Bagenalstown, County Carlow, IrelandG.1
