     Major William Alan Cairnes was born in 1858.1 He was the son of William Henry Cairnes and Isabella Jameson.2,1 He married Helen Douglas Gower Stephenson, daughter of William Stephenson and Louisa catherine Hunt, on 8 July 1896 at St. Peters, Cranley Gardens, Kensington, London, EnglandG.1,3 He died in 1903, from illness contracted in the Boer War.1
     He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Kent, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Engineers.1
