     He was educated at Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, Yorkshire, England.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards.2 He was with Dorland Advertising Group in 1957.2 He was with Twiss Browning & Hallowes wine merchants in 1958.2 He was managing director of Gilbey Vintners in 1970.2 He was with international Distillers and Vintners UK Ltd in 1973.2 He was managing director and CEO of IDV Europe Ltd between 1982 and 1992.2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.) in 1992.2 He was CEO of Grand Met plc between 1993 and 1996.2 He was chairman of Grand Met plc between 1996 and 1998.2 He was joint chairman of Diageo between 1997 and 1998.2 He was CEO of J Sainsbury plc in 1998.2
