He married, secondly, Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi, Princess of Monaco, daughter of Rainier III Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi, Prince de Monaco and Grace Kelly, on 23 January 1999. Ernst August and Chantal were remarried in a religious ceremony on 30 August 1981 at Schloss Marienburg.

He married Countess Isabella Valsassina von Thurn, daughter of Ariprand Graf von Thurn und Valsassina-Como-Vercelli and Marie Perpetua Euphemia Prinzessin von Auersperg, in September 1988. He was also reported to have been married on 4 October 1987 at Bleiburg, Carinthia, Austria. He died on 29 November 1989 at age 34 at Gmunden, Ober-Osterreich, Austria. He was buried on 2 December 1989 at Grunau, Austria.
