     James Arbuthnot was born on 21 July 1855 at Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of George Clerk Arbuthnot and Caroline Ramsay Hay.1 He married, firstly, Mary Steward Taylor, daughter of Captain Ralph Neufville Taylor and Frances Anne Buckle, on 22 April 1879.1 He and Mary Steward Taylor were divorced in 1896.1 He married, secondly, Mary Margaret Mann, daughter of Lowry Mann, on 22 October 1897 at Bombay, India.1,2 He died on 16 April 1913 at age 57.1
     James Arbuthnot was educated at Glenalmond College, Perthshire, Scotland.2
