     He fought in the Egyptian Campaign.1 He fought in the Boer War, where he was wounded at Magersfontein and Paarderburg, and was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Major in the Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch).1 He was Brigade-Major of the Territorial Forces Infantry.1 He gained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Highlanders (The Black Watch).1
