William Barclay was the son of Walter Barclay of Towie and Elizabeth Hay.1 A contract for the marriage of William Barclay and Anna Napier was signed on 21 March 1602.1 He died circa 1630.1
William Barclay graduated from Louvain University, Louvain, Belgium, with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).1 He graduated from Louvain University, Louvain, Belgium, with a MAster of Arts (M.A.).1 He was Professor of Humanity in 1598 at Paris University, Paris, France.1 He wrote the book Nepenthes, or the virtues of Tobacco, published 1615, which provoked King James VI's Counterblast in reply.1
