James Duff was born on 1 January 1728/29 at Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of Alexander Duff, 1st of Hatton and Catherine Duff.1 He married, firstly, Helen Skene on 12 August 1755.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Ogilvie Dunbar, daughter of James Dunbar, in February 1772.1 He died on 19 November 1804 at age 75 at Banff, Banffshire, Scotland.1
