Charles Mathewes Bruce was born on 14 December 1875.1 He was the son of Colonel Elliott Armstrong Bruce and Mary Rebecca Dawson.1 He married Emily Violet Taylor, daughter of George Taylor, on 20 February 1929.1 He died on 22 September 1940 at age 64.1
Charles Mathewes Bruce graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.).1 He was Principal Assistant to the Secretary of the Admiralty.1 He was Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1918.1 He was Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1933.1
