Sir John Alastair Trant Kidd Buchan-Hepburn of Smeaton Hepburn, 7th Bt. was born on 27 June 1931.1 He is the son of John Trant Buchan-Hepburn and Edith Margaret Mitchell Robb.2 He married Georgina Elizabeth Turner, daughter of Oswald Morris Turner, on 21 September 1958.1
Sir John Alastair Trant Kidd Buchan-Hepburn of Smeaton Hepburn, 7th Bt. usually went by his middle name of Alastair.1 He was educated at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, England.1 He was educated at St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1954 in the service of the King's Dragoon Guards.1 He was Aide-de-Camp to General Officer Commanding Malaya between 1956 and 1957.1 He succeeded to the title of 7th Baronet Buchan-Hepburn [U.K., 1815] in 1992.2 He lived in 2003 at Chagford, 60 Argyle Street, St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.1
