     Melville Portal was born on 31 July 1819.2 He was the son of John Portal and Elizabeth Drummond. He married Lady Charlotte Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, daughter of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 2nd Earl of Minto and Mary Brydone, on 9 October 1855.2 He died on 24 January 1904 at age 84.
