     James Carmichael was born circa 1569.1 He was the son of Sir John Carmichael of that Ilk and Margaret Douglas.1 He died in 1596, killed in a duel with Adam Bruntfield, without issue.1

     Mary Carmichael was the daughter of Sir John Carmichael of that Ilk and Margaret Douglas.1 A contract for the marriage of Mary Carmichael and John Bothwell was signed on 1 July 1596.1 She died on 9 May 1626.1
     Mary Carmichael held the office of Lady in Waiting to Queen Anne of Demark.1 She was also known as Marion.1 From 1 July 1596, her married name became Bothwell.1
