David Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven of Freeland was the son of Thomas Ruthven, 1st Lord Ruthven of Freeland and Isabel Balfour.2 He died in April 1701, unmarried.1
David Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven of Freeland succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Ruthven of Freeland [S., 1651] on 6 May 1671.1 On 26 October 1674 he entailed his estates, failing his own issue, on his sisters and their issue, with precedence to the youngest.1 He held the office of Lord of the Privy Counsel in 1689.1

Sir William Ruthven of Cunninghamehead, 4th Bt. was baptised with the name of William Cunninghame.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Cunninghame.1 On after April 1722 his name was legally changed to William Ruthven.1
On his death, his baronetcy became dormant.1
