     Alexander Ruthven of Freeland was the son of William Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven and Janet Halyburton, Lady Dirletoun.2 He married Elizabeth Moncreiffe, daughter of William Moncreiffe of that Ilk and Margaret Murray.1 He died on 9 October 1599.1
     He was denounced as a rebel for his part in Rizzio's murder.1 He lived at Freeland, Scotland.1

     William Moncreiffe of that Ilk fought in the Battle of Solway between March 1541/42 and September 1542, where he was captured by the English.3
