     Sir William Carlyle, 2nd Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald was the son of John Carlyle, Master of Carlyle.1 He married Janet Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell and Janet Crichton, before 12 July 1487.1 He died from 22 February 1523/24 to 28 May 1525.1
     He was appointed Knight on 29 January 1487/88.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald [S., 1474] circa 1501.1 On 12 January 1500/1 he had a charter of the Barony of Carlyle.1 On 11 May 1503 he had seizin of certain of his grandfather's lands.1
