Michael Carlyle, 4th Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald was the son of Sir William Carlyle, 2nd Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald and Janet Maxwell.1 He married, firstly, Janet Charteris.1 He married, secondly, Mariot Maxwell, daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood.1 He died in June 1575, slain by English marauders.1 His will was probated on 27 January 1577/78 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2

Mariot Maxwell was the daughter of Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood.2 She married Michael Carlyle, 4th Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald, son of Sir William Carlyle, 2nd Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald and Janet Maxwell.1 She died after January 1608/9.3

James Douglas, 6th Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald was the son of Sir James Douglas of Parkhead and Elizabeth Carlyle, Lady Carlyle of Torthorwald.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Gordon, daughter of Sir John Gordon of Lochinvar and Elizabeth Maxwell, before 27 December 1604.1 He and Elizabeth Gordon were divorced in 1615 for her adultery with William Bannatyne.1 He married, secondly, Ann Saltonstall in November 1618 at Parish Church, Ludgate Hill.1 He and Ann Saltonstall were divorced on 8 August 1622 on grounds of his adultery.1 He died after 1622.2

On 24 March 1573/74 The Barony of Carlyle was alienated to him.1 On 4 March 1580/81 the charter was confirmed under the Great Seal, however, after long litigation, this settlement appears to have been set aside, and Elizabeth Carlyle found to be the heir general.1
